It's been about 25 years since my last confession. Exactly what level of "heathen" does that put me in? I'm thinking it's probably up in there in the "super heathen" category.
Tonight at 6:30, The Girl will be making her First Reconciliation. For you non Catholic types, this would be synonymous with First Confession. For you Catholic types, the term "confession" will most likely make you break out in hives and begin to suffer from spontaneous, explosive diarrhea. Sorry, but it's true.
Every good Catholic suffers through the terror of their first time in a confessional. It's kind of like your first gynecological exam. You know have HAVE to do it but you don't WANT to do it. Luckily a priest has never told me to "slide down until you touch my hand" but I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility. But like the dreaded date with the speculum, you breathe a sigh of relief as soon as you walk out of the confessional. A few Hail Mary's & Acts of Contrition later and there you have it - a brand new slate for your shiny new soul. I heart Catholicism.
The Girl isn't feeling it so much right at the moment. She's a little green and is stuffing herself with cookies to ease her fears. Damn - she is SO her mother's daughter. I mean, if your mom can't commiserate with you, then who can? But in her journey as a Catholic, this is a big day for her. Just like her Baptism & her First Communion, she gets to add another sacrament to her list of accomplishments. Next will be Confirmation and from there, either Marriage or The Nunnery. Mach One would choose the nunnery option - lucky for us, he doesn't get the final vote.
The Girl & I will include you in our prayers this evening. And my only request to all of you - pray that we're done in time to watch American Idol this evening. Amen.
Good Luck to The Girl, tonight!!! My daughter is making her's on St. Pats Day---she is already nervous about it.
